Acne, or as it is known by its scienitific name acne vulgaris, is a skin condition that is very common and that is caused by disturbances in our pilosebaceous units. A pilosebaceous unit consists of a hair follicle and a sebaceous gland. Almost 90% of all teenagers are affected by acne to some degree and it is quite common for the problems to continue into adulthood.

In this day and age several different acne treatment options are available and which is best is dependent on the severity of the problem. Strong acne medication often requires a doctors prescription while milder options can be bought over the counter in your local pharmacy.

Lesl severe cases are usually treated using benzoyl peroxide administered by the use of soaps, creams and gels. Make sure that you check the strenght of a product before you buy it as it can vary a lot. Benzoyl perozxide dissolves the keratin that has been plugging the pores in the skin, and will also kill off. Propionibacterium acnes which is a slow growing , usually aerotolerant bacterium that has been linkied to acne by scienitifc studies.

Another way to treat acne is to use antibiotics that are ingested or applied to the skin.. Topical antibiotics will kill the bacteria present on the skin and in the follicles and is a popular choice among patients suffering from acne on a relatively small part of skin that is easy to reach, e.g. the face or chest. Persons with widespread acne or acne in hard to reach spots like the shoulders and neck often opt for oral antibiotics instead, although they will have a larger impact on the body and can for instance cause stomach problems. Always tell the doctor if you use any hormones before getting a acne treatmen as hormones and antibiotics can interfere with eachother, this especially improtant if you use hormonal contraceptives.

One type of acne that used to be known as open comedo is now referred to as blackheads. Blackhead are black or yellow and casued by excess oil collected in pores. Blacks are not, despite the popular myth, caused by bad hygiene. On the countrary, excessive scrubbing of the skin can cause increased dryness which in turn can cause more blackheads as the body increase the production of oils needed in the skin.

Many wants to know how to remove blackheads since they do not like the way they look, there are however no medical need to remove blackheads and the body will eliminate them in time. It is possible to treat blackheads with acne medication such as salicylic acid. A popular over the counter alternative to prescription medicine is a simple adhesive strip that is placed on the skin and removed after 5-10 minutes, taking the blackheads underneath with it.
